Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injection: Targeted Relief for Back and Leg Pain

Are you experiencing persistent back or leg pain that is affecting your daily life? Lumbar epidural steroid injection offers a targeted and effective solution for alleviating pain caused by conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or sciatica. As a Pain Consultant, I'm  dedicated to helping patients find relief, and lumbar epidural steroid injection is one of the key treatments we offer.

What is a Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injection?

A lumbar epidural steroid injection is a minimally invasive procedure that involves delivering a corticosteroid medication directly into the epidural space of the lower back. The epidural space surrounds the spinal cord and nerves, and the medication helps reduce inflammation and relieve pain in the affected area. The injection is typically guided by fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray imaging) to ensure precise needle placement.

The Procedure:

During a lumbar epidural steroid injection, you will lie on your stomach or side on an X-ray table. The area where the injection will be administered is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Using fluoroscopic guidance, a thin needle is then carefully inserted into the epidural space, and the steroid medication is injected. The procedure typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes, and you may be able to go home the same day.

Done for patients with back pain and leg pains ( Sciatica). Usually patients have Lumbar lateral canal stenosis. The Procedure is similar to what women have for labour pain but here it is done with Xray guidance and steroid is the medication given through. After 48 hours patients feel very good pain relief. https://fpm.ac.uk/sites/fpm/files/documents/2019-11/FPM-PIL-Epidural-steroid-injection-Sep-2019-ed.pdf

Benefits of Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injection:

Pain Relief: The primary benefit of a lumbar epidural steroid injection is effective pain relief. By delivering medication directly to the source of inflammation and irritation, this procedure can significantly reduce pain in the lower back and legs. It can help you regain mobility, engage in daily activities with less discomfort, and improve your overall quality of life.

Minimally Invasive: Lumbar epidural steroid injection is a minimally invasive procedure that offers several advantages over surgical interventions. It involves a small needle and does not require general anesthesia, resulting in shorter recovery time, reduced risk of complications, and minimal scarring.

Targeted Approach: The injection is administered precisely to the affected area, targeting the inflamed nerves or spinal structures causing your pain. This targeted approach increases the likelihood of pain relief and reduces the need for systemic medications that can have more widespread side effects.

Non-Surgical Alternative: Lumbar epidural steroid injection provides a non-surgical alternative for individuals seeking pain relief from conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or sciatica. It can offer comparable results to surgery without the associated risks, making it a valuable treatment option for many patients.

Improved Function and Quality of Life: By reducing pain and inflammation, lumbar epidural steroid injection can improve your physical function and overall quality of life. It may allow you to participate in activities that were previously limited or even prevented by pain, helping you regain your independence and enjoy life to the fullest.

Customized Treatment: Being a consultant specilized in pain management, I will thoroughly evaluate your condition, medical history, and symptoms to determine if a lumbar epidural steroid injection is the right treatment for you. If so, I will customize the procedure to address your specific pain and optimize the outcome.
